Deals Site Offers the Microsoft Kin One for $25 - Ina Fried - Mobile - AllThingsD

Wow 3 years later, it lives!  I spent 3 years of my life working on this product.  We were innovative, we were cutting edge, we were Kin.  A startup inside of MSFT.  Being a startup inside of a large company is exhilarating.  You get to be fast and agile, while having technology and money at your disposal.  Engineering and design wise Kin was awesome.   Business wise, it didn’t work.  But it was a fantastic learning experience.  One that taught me a ton and has made me better at building product.  So thanks for all of the great time Kin!

VatorNews - What women want: Do we need more female VCs?

Chicken and egg discussion.  Do we need more female VCs? More female entrepreneurs? More female engineers?  Or all of the above.  An interesting perspective from Heidi Rozen and Deborah Jackson.

Here’s a fun tidbit for all of us “old dog” entrepreneurs: experience counts. What’s the ideal age to start a company? Thirty-four

So glad I decided to start my company at the perfect age!  :) Also shout out to the Founders Institute.  Doing awesome stuff and ahead of the curve as always.  @founding

Our industry needs to grow up too. Perhaps the reason we’ve had so much trouble maturing is that we don’t have enough women to help us make the transition from child to adult. Their attitudes, their ways of thinking, different from ours, may be the very things we need to complete us as an industry, and a profession, and as a craft. It seems to me we need these women in order for our profession to become a profession.

I think that Bob presents a balanced perspective on trying to get more women in tech.   We don’t want to be treated differently, but we also don’t want to feel like we are in a men’s locker room.    Time for the tech world to grow up!

Why Innovators Love Constraints - @WhitneyJohnson @HarvardBiz

Interesting article that spoke to me.  Having been at MSFT for so many years, it is easy to tie up your identity in it.    Now that I am working on my own, it is a green field.  So many possibilities… of course which one to pick?  I love learning so for me it is easy to flit back and forth among this projects like a bee to a flower.  However, to execute and build my brand outside of MSFT I need to buckle down and constrain myself to a few projects and make them spectacular.

Good article about really listening to people and connecting with them.  I am going to work on this!

I related to this going through this myself right now.  No longer am I “Ali Heron from Microsoft”  this was my identity for 10 years.  I listened to an interesting talk from 85 Broads yesterday which talked about how it is more important to define what you want to become instead of what you want to achieve.  Having goals is good, but you can’t let them define you or limit you.  You can only control yourself not the world around you and doing this can make you feel much happier an in control.   As I continue embarking on this journey, I am going to work on this and I think it will help me to get out of my own way.

natasha mooney: Why There Aren’t More Women In Silicon Valley Start-Ups @nlmooney

Old post, but a good one.  We HAVE to start companies with women in positions of power.  Trying to fix the issue retroactively makes it even harder.

That’s the sad reality for women at the highest rungs of the executive ranks in corporate America. Everyone applauds when they shatter that glass ceiling. Then they pick up the shards, and start cutting away.

Beware of broken glass: the media’s double standard for women at the top | The Verge

Sad but true.  Why can’t the “impartial” media portray a balanced analysis of executive women.   As we celebrate international women’s day, I hope we can change this for the better!!

A Simple Suggestion to Help Phase Out All-Male Panels at Tech Conferences - Rebecca J. Rosen - The Atlantic

Speaking on a panel at a conference is so much fun and I have met amazing people.  But I have yet to figure out how to get involved in more conference.  Is there a magical signup list somewhere?   If you are reading this, demand diversity in any conferences you are involved with.  There can’t only be one (usually white and male) expert in the world.

Paradoxically, the best way to get more done may be to spend more time doing less. A new and growing body of multidisciplinary research shows that strategic renewal — including daytime workouts, short afternoon naps, longer sleep hours, more time away from the office and longer, more frequent vacations — boosts productivity, job performance and, of course, health.

This is going to be my new thing, as I now work for myself I feel that I am always working and less productive.  Need to ensure I give myself the time to rejuvenate and not punish myself for taking the time.
